The Farmer's Daughter was an American sitcom that aired for three seasons on ABC from 20 September 1963 to 22 April 1966. It was a Screen Gems production, produced by Bob Claver and Peter Kortner. It starred Inger Stevens as Katrin "Katy" Holstrum, a Swedish farm girl who moved to the United States where she found work as a housekeeper for a widowed U.S. congressman Glen Morley (William Windom) and his two sons in suburban Washington, D.C. The show aired Fridays from 9:30 to 10 p.m. during the fall of 1963 before moving to Wednesdays from 8:30 to 9 p.m. for the remainder of the first season. It moved to Fridays from 8 to 8:30 p.m. for the second season. It moved to Sundays from 9:30 to 10 for summer reruns in 1965 and stayed in that slot the following fall, then back to its original time slot of Fridays from 9:30 to 10 for the remainder of its run.

In 1964 Inger Stevens won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy in 1964 for her performance in the show.

The Farmer's Daughter was loosely based on the 1947 film of the same name, which was written by Allen Rivkin and Laura Kerr and starred Loretta Young in an Oscar-winning performance.

The Monkees connections[]

Davy Jones appeared in the episode "Moe Hill and the Mountains", which broadcast on Friday, 7 January 1966 at 9:30 p.m. He played Roland, one of the bandmates of Inger's teenage stepson Steve Morley, played by Mickey Sholdar. The nascent band, Moe Hill and the Mountains, performed the song "I'm Gonna Buy Me a Dog" by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, which would later be recorded by the Monkees under the title "Gonna Buy Me a Dog". Stacey Maxwell, who played Alythia on this episode, also appeared in The Monkees episode Monkee See, Monkee Die as Ellie Reynolds.

This was notable as Davy's first appearance in a sitcom, his first appearance in colour, his first role as a member of a rock band, and his last role before appearing on The Monkees the following fall.

The screen tests for The Monkees took place on the set of The Farmer's Daughter, which can be seen in the Monkees episode "Here Come the Monkees".

As both The Farmer's Daughter and The Monkees were produced by Screen Gems during the mid-60s, there were many people who worked on both series. Songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote the theme song for The Farmer's Daughter. They also wrote the Monkees songs "Love Is Only Sleeping" and "Shades of Gray". Both series also had the same production manager, Lawrence Werner, art director, Ross Bellah, and makeup supervisor, Ben Lane.
